Yoga teacher promotes campaign for Brazilian shanty town and animal sanctuary in Peterborough

Brazilian-Italian journalist and yoga teacher, Regina Perrusi, is in Peterborough this year to help promote Community projects in Recife, northeast of Brazil . She hopes to raise awareness for these through yoga workshops and meditation classes that she will be offering during her time here in St. Jude's Church Community Hall , in Netherton, and in St. Peter & All Souls Catholic Parish Hall, in the city centre.

Coque is a ‘favela’ ( shanty town ) of some 44, 0000 people in the district of Recife. north-eastern Brazil. In contrast to the natural tropical beauty of the nearby beaches and countryside, the people of Coque live in very low conditions of poverty, health and crime. With very little social and economic infra-structure, 80% of families live in real poverty, squalor and the constant threat of violence, drug and gun crime. Most families are made up of single mothers. One of the biggest problem of the Coque community nowadays is the increase in violence associated with the expansion of drugs traffic, a trend within many of the ‘favelas’ across Brazil. Teenagers and even small children are being seduced into this ways of life, often abandoning school and becoming the centre of concern for the local community and institutions.

An example of a project is NEIMFA which was set up in 1986 by concerned individuals to establish, maintain and where possible extend social, educational, spiritual and health activities inside the community. Many are aimed at the most vulnerable, children and the elderly and currently
support about 500 people on a regular basis, through child education courses, health promotion and projects to encourage self-help and social involvement. Many activities are run by volunteers from outside the community giving what time they can, including psychologists, doctors, students, journalists, cooks, accountants, teachers, lawyers etc. Some of the ongoing projects needing support are the setting -up of a shop to sell products from the courses inside the community, construction of a popular library and a longer term project to educate some of the interested youngsters in journalism and media. Financial support is always needed to help pay for human resources such as cooks, teachers and for basic public services like gas and water

Regina says “it is impossible to describe the desperate and complicated conditions of places like Coque and the effects on lives. For sure, without these types of community initiatives, the lives of many children and others would be much, much worse”. Regina has decided that one way to help, as a member of UK Yoga Alliance and a highly qualified yoga teacher, running her own yoga studio in Brazil, will be giving classes and workshops in integral yoga and meditation during her time here. She currently teaches trainees, children, adults, pregnant women and elderly people in yoga in order to help them find health, peace and self-knowledge. She will also give Buddhist meditation sessions.

Part of profits raised from these and other activities will be directed to supporting these community works as well as MPColina, an animal sanctuary for abandoned street dogs and cats, in Recife, Brazil. If you would like to know more about these projects or how to support them or the yoga and meditation, please contact Regina direct on 0757 6578821 or 07886459458.
